We feel it’s safe to say that we’ve all been waiting for today: Bahia de las Águilas, a pristine beach tucked away in the southwestern corner of the Dominican Republic, only accessible by motor boat. We and a few of our new friends in the community set out early in the morning to tackle the roughly 3-4 hour drive. Along the way we made note of several stops we could make on our way back, most notably Los Patos, a natural freshwater spring. Once we arrived at the port we stopped and had a delicious lunch of fish, chicken, plantains, and lambí (we only found out afterward that it’s made of snails!).
After lunch and a 15-minute boat ride we finally touched down on the sandy beach of Bahia de las Águilas. Words can’t do justice to how incredible it was there but hopefully the photos below will give you a glimpse (the giant iguanas we saw are not included). We snorkeled, we played volleyball, and we got some much needed relaxation, after which we headed back to the port to have dinner and camp out by the water. The next day we enjoyed the beach for a bit and started our trek back to El Peñón, making stops along the way, and preparing to wrap up our projects. All in all we think it was a beach day that will be tough to ever top.
Sun-kissed and well-rested,
